MAMMOUTH
Although I’m keen to explore new spots in and beyond Brussels, there are admittedly some neighbourhoods that I frequent less. This used to be the case with the Gare du Midi area until I tried Mammouth, a delicious restaurant that is enough of a reason for me to keep going back. Tucked away in one of the side streets close to the train station, Mammouth was set up by Anaïs and Charlotte, two sisters who left their jobs as a teacher and lawyer to pursue their dream. After successfully launching a crowdfunding campaign, they created a bright and cosy restaurant that offers delicious food.
The first time I visited Mammouth was a few months ago together with a group of fellow blogaholics for a bloggers’ event organized by the lovely Alice. As I stepped in I was pleasantly surprised by how bright and beautifully decorated the space was: big windows that let plenty of light in, hanging plants, kilim cushions, open kitchen and a cute cactus named Diego! The ladies of Mammouth had prepared an array of yummy dishes that I wish I could recreate at home myself, like the colorful vegetable dips I’m still dreaming about. As we took our seats, steaming bowls of happiness aka pumpkin and carrot soup arrived on the table followed by a generous portion of homemade meatloaf and different vegetable preparations. Every mouthful was proof that Mammouth is hands down one of the best healthy lunch spots in Brussels and that slow food is the way to go.
The menu changes daily depending on the season and what’s on offer at the market. You can pop by for breakfast, lunch or just a cup of coffee (although I’m warning you that it will be difficult to resist dessert!). Mammouth also organizes brunch on the weekends from time to time (just keep an eye on their facebook page) for which you need to reserve in advance. Whether you work in the area, are travelling to or from Brussels or looking for a new spot to try, Mammouth will not disappoint you. There’s free wifi, delicious food and very kind staff to take good care of you.
