LA BELLE EQUIPE
La Belle Equipe combines two of my favourite things for a relaxed dinner with friends: wine and really good pizza. What more do you need anyway, right?
Frederic Nicolay, the man behind some of Brussels’ most known hangouts like Cafe Belga, Walvis, Flamingo, Barbeton, Potemkine, Bravo, Bar du Matin (and the list goes on!), seems to have found the recipe for success. His signature style is present in the cool industrial interior with exposed brick walls, wooden tables, low lighting, jazz in the background and a flaming wooden stove. There’s also a cute little terrace in the back for warm days. The atmosphere is informal, so the place feels more like a pizza bar rather than a proper restaurant. After all, those high stools are not the most comfortable seating you could ask for…
Luckily, the food will reward you! The star here is undoubtedly the pizza. Choice is somewhat limited but the quality is definitely there. The dough, which is flattened with a special machine, is perfectly thin, crusty and topped with fresh ingredients. My friends and I ordered some natural wine and a few pizzas to go with, which arrived straight from the oven and tasted like heaven – definitely one of the best pizza spots in Brussels! During lunch time, you can also have a sandwich or a soup in case you just want to have a quick bite.
If you’re looking for a spot for a casual dinner with friends, La Belle Equipe is a good choice. Just make sure to arrive early as they don’t take reservations and the place is filling up quickly. But even if you’re not lucky enough to find a place to seat, they do takeaway. Try it and let me know what you think!
