LILY VANILLI BAKERY

My favourite treat on Sunday mornings in East London is a visit to Columbia Road Flower Market for fresh flowers and Lily Vanilli Bakery for cake. Truth be told, I could easily see myself going back on other occasions too, but sadly this spot is open only on Sundays between 8:30-16:00 while the flower market is running.

If you have a major sweet tooth like me, you have already heard of Lily Vanilli (aka Lily Jones) most probably. She’s really what we would call a “success story”: graphic designer and self-taught baker, Lily Vanilli started selling cakes at a small market space off Brick Lane to make some extra cash when the recession hit. It wasn’t long before she got discovered by a Times journalist and met with success. Her unconventional cakes made of unusual ingredients, like her ntotrious “brain cake”, earned her the reputation of “London’s rock ‘n’ roll baker” and the rest is history.

Lily Vanilli bakery is where the magic happens. Tucked away in a beautiful courtyard, this tiny but super cute cafe has character: exposed brick walls, wooden counters and a small seating area full of vintage ornaments and cook books to browse through while you sip your cuppa of Coleman Coffee Roasters. Apart from the incredibly beautiful cakes and cupcakes (including my favourite, red velvet with coconut) you can also enjoy some savoury treats. Similarly to Columbia Road Flower Market, make sure you arrive early or late in the day if getting cosy with others isn’t really your thing!
