KAFFABAR
Great coffee, free wifi, cute sleeping dog – the little blackboard outside Kaffabar sums it up pretty well. And if you’re someone who loves both good coffee and bulldogs (more on that right here!), finding a spot that somehow combines both feels like you just hit the coffee shop jackpot!
Marc Daniels, the owner of Kaffabar, left a career in the financial sector to become a barista and pursue his love for coffee. The labour of this love, a cosy coffee shop in the centre of Brussels, opened its doors in February 2016. Tucked into a calm corner of Place Rouppe not too far from Houtsiplou, Kaffabar is a great spot to relax and enjoy specialty and origin coffee. Slow coffee and espresso are brewed with a smile and attention to detail.
Having got my barista diploma just last year, it was great talking to Marc who is just as passionate about specialty coffee. He’s got top notch equipment and offers different manual brewing methods too – V60, Aeropress, Chemex and French Press. No need to worry if you’re not sure what the differences are; the staff will gladly explain! Kaffabar sources its coffee from different roasters, including Mok in Leuven, Lomi in Paris and The Barn in Berlin. Besides coffee, there’s chocolate drinks, excellent tea which comes with a little timer for perfect extraction, delicious cakes and two different breakfast options should you arrive hungry.
The interior is modern and inviting. Black painted walls, marble tables and wood panel benches make up for a lovely space; not to mention the sunny terrace and free wifi. But the real star is Marcel, the owner’s cute bulldog, that has become the mascot of Kaffabar! Whenever he’s not asleep, he welcomes the guests, watches the space from its HQ (i.e. his little bed) and gets a ton of attention and cuddles from the regulars. I’m one of them.
Kaffabar is yet another great spot to pin on your Brussels coffee map. Come with friends or enjoy some quality alone time – Marcel is there to keep you company anyway!
