CHOCOLATERIA SAN GINES
During my last trip to Madrid I discovered the perfect spot for hot chocolate and churros. If you don’t really know what “chocolate con churros” is imagine this: crispy fried-dough pastry accompanied by rich, thick hot chocolate to dip. A true calorie bomb but oh so good! And the best place to get it is Chocolatería San Ginés. When a Spanish friend recommended this place, I looked it up, read all the praising reviews and arrived with high expectations. Luckily, this little cafe was everything I hoped for and more! See, normally places like this end up being awful tourist traps, but in my opinion the Chocolateria San Gines is anything but.
Tucked away in a little passage close to the San Gines church in the centre of Madrid, Chocolateria San Gines has been open since 1984. Oldie, but goodie! Despite being very busy and fairly inexpensive, there are no queues – you can pop by at any time during the day and find a table very quickly. Coffee and cakes are also served, but let’s face it; the churros and hot chocolate is what everyone comes here for! Warm, crisp, light and not overly sweet, the churros were probably the best I’ve ever had – love at first bite! If you ever visit Madrid, the Chocolateria San Gines is really worth a visit for a sweet little break in between sightseeing.
