AVLI
Summer breeze, cobbled alleys in the Old Town of Rethymno, the aroma of jasmine blossoms and eye-popping colours of bougainvillea… does it get any better? Well, maybe if you add in the mix of of the best restaurants in the city: Avli.
Located in a picturesque cobblestone, Avli is housed in a Venetian mansion dating back to 1530. The restaurant features a cosy barrel-vaulted dining room which is ideal during the winter but come spring, everyone opts for the beautiful courtyard (“avli” in Greek) which is adorned with blossomed orange trees, vines and colorful details. Apart from the gorgeous setting, Avli also serves delicious food. The dishes are creative mix of traditional Cretan dishes with a modern twist.
The menu changes every now and then but if you get a chance try the mushrooms with cheese mousse as well as the marinated goat in honey and thyme. I’m getting hungry just thinking about the last one! The selection of wines is also interesting – feel free to ask the stuff which one compliments best your meal and they’ll be happy to give you advice.
Price-wise Avli is a tad more expensive than your typical Greek taverna, but well worth every penny if you ask me. If you plan to try it during the summer months, I highly recommend a reservation as it’s a quite popular spot – perfect for a romantic dinner or a delicious meal in beautiful surroundings with friends.
