MOONFOOD

One of the most common misconceptions about vegan food is that it is by no means gourmet or at least, varied enough to keep things interesting. After being blown away by TAN restaurant and how good vegetarian food actually tastes when cooked properly and with the right ingredients, I was rather curious to take one step further and try Moonfood, the new vegan restaurant close to Gare Centrale in Brussels.

The concept is quite interesting: healthy fast food or more specifically, living vegan food packaged and ready to take away or enjoy at Moonfood’s premises. As Thierry, the owner of Moonfood, explained to me, he collaborated with Annie Jubb before travelling around the world to discover raw and living food projects. All dishes are based solely on fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and are free of gluten, lactose, refined sugar, hydrogenated oils, trans fats, GMO and pesticides. Nothing is heated over 46 degrees so that all enzymes and vitamins are preserved while nuts and seeds are soaked and sprouted to be easily digested. Moonfood also uses a special filtration system to remove all chemicals from water.

During my visit Thierry kindly let me try some of the dishes and snacks already on offer. I really liked the idea of having a healthy and delicious light bite in between meals, like crackers with buckwheat, coconut and raisins, dehydrated blood oranges, tomatoes or orange peel with agave syrup. Another positive surprise was the “green wrap” made with carrot, apple, zucchini, seeds and filled with fresh veggies, two different kinds of homemade pesto sauces – simple ingredients full of flavour and quite filling. My tasting ended on a sweet (and as it appears, guilt-free) note: a dessert made with three layers of cashew nuts, raw coffee and cocoa beans, and coconut cream. Over time there will be around 20 dishes to choose from, so if you love healthy food, get ready to be spoiled!

The space is also a plus – bright, airy, calm and with interesting design details. Moonfood is just steps away from the beautiful Parc Royal, so on a sunny day you can just grab your lunch, lay on the grass and enjoy a super healthy meal!
