PETERSHAM NURSERIES

Do you love flowers and dream of having a large garden when you can grow your own plants? Do you fancy decorating little corners of your home with pretty pots and ceramics? Are you fond of cute slow food restaurants? Then keep reading; you’re gonna love this spot!

The rather wonderful Petersham Nurseries had been on my list for as long as I remember and I finally got to visit it last weekend. Located next to the Thames, in the heart of Richmond’s conservation area, this place is an absolute gem in the countryside and less than an hour from central London. The Petersham Nurseries are basically a garden centre with a teahouse and a restaurant which reflect the founders’ Italian roots and travels in Asia, an unexpected yet harmonious combination.

When a friend told me about this spot, I suspected I would like it. But I have to say that in real life, it was even better – the pictures don’t do it justice. I actually loved it so much that I couldn’t stop myself from posting about a million pictures on my Instagram Stories and as soon as I got back home, I started writing this post so that I could share it with all of you!

My partner in crime and I arrived quite early and managed to book two spots for lunch in the main restaurant. We spent the next couple of hours browsing through the stunning shop and all the beautiful items on display from antique furniture and Murano glassware to gardening tools and specialist indoor plants. If I had to picture my dream home in the countryside, it would look like this (a girl can dream!). The setting of the tea room and restaurant is also nothing short of magical. They are both housed in beautiful Victorian glasshouses and are full of colourful flowers, all the way up to the ceiling.

The food was also a pleasant surprise albeit pricey. The menu changes according to the season and all dishes feature edible flowers or herbs and vegetables from the Petersham Garden. We shared two dishes (tagliatelle with girolles, marjoram and parmesan & pork with potatoes kale and apple) but our favourite was the dessert: chocolate, blackcurrant and pistachio tart with mixed berry ice cream. If you are not hungry or cannot afford the restaurant, you can have a cup of loose leaf tea and a slice of cake (the lemon poppyseed one is really good!).

Petersham Nurseries have launched their shop in Covent Garden, so if you don’t have the time to go all the way to Richmond, you can always stop by to experience a little bit of its magic!
