ORTSAG

It’s no secret that Athens loves street food. A list of the best spots for street food in the city is in the making, so watch this space! But let me tell you about Ortsag for now, the hip street food restaurant by the Michelin-awarded chef Alex Tsiotinis that everyone has been raving about. And with good reason, may I add.

Wondering what “Ortsag” means? Well, it’s “gastro” spelled backwards! The chef and founder of fine dining restaurant CTC has decided to do things differently with this concept in response to food waste. The goal is to create delicious dishes using high-quality leftover raw materials from the menu of CTC which is located just a few meters away. The menu is based on two types of offerings: a few daily dishes that keep changing based on what becomes available from CTC and a variety of creative burgers. When it comes to the latter, there are five options at the moment: vegetarian, smashed beef, chicken, fish and pulled brisket pastrami. The menu completes with different sides, cocktails and two desserts, including Ortsag’s homemade soft serve (that was music to my ears; y’all know how much I love ice cream!).

The chicken burger (cornflake crusted with spicy rocket mayo, bacon and iceberg) as well as the corn ribs with cheese and truffle sauce (a nod to CTC’s iconic corn soup) were my personal favourites while my partner in crime loved the double smashed burger (Black Angus with fried egg mayo, caramelised onions, cheddar, bacon and iceberg) and the potato loukoumades (the Greek version of donuts) with pastirma and aged cheddar sauce. We also had a side of fries which was amazing, probably the best I’ve had in a while. Next time I’d love to try the fish burger and their fish n’ chips – you can take the girl out of the UK but you can’t take the UK out of the girl!

The space is industrial with clean lines, a big mural depicting a chef in action with the Keramikos neighbourhood in the background and a terrace with a few tables. Grab a seat, collect your order from the counter when it’s ready and enjoy some of Athens’ most delicious street food. A great spot for a casual night out, to satisfy your street food cravings or for a quick bite if you find yourselves in the centre of Athens. And if you’re still not convinced, take a look at my reel on Instagram – it will hopefully do the trick!
