ODETTE
I am one of those people who can never say no to sweets and pastries, so whenever I find myself in Paris, it’s impossible to resist temptation. Last time I was in town I attended a dinner party, so I stopped by Odette to buy some treats for the host who also has a major sweet tooth. Needless to say, we both loved them, so I figured I had to share this great little spot with you too.
Located right across the Seine, just a few meters away from the Notre Dame Cathedral, Odette is a tiny jewel box of a dessert shop on a charming cobblestone street. The specialty here is the chou à la crème aka the cream puff. But make no mistake, this is not your average cream puff. After all, if you are daring enough to sell only one item, it means you’re probably pretty damn good at it. Frédéric Berthy, the owner, used to spend many afternoons as a child at his grandmother Odette’s kitchen where she would bake these little bites of heaven. Today, the famous cream puffs of Odette are based on her original recipe.
There are quite a few flavours to choose from: vanilla, chocolate, caramel, coffee, pistachio, praline, lemon, berries, and green tea. All tried, tested and approved! Each chou is topped with a layer of fondant and dusted with powdered sugar, making it even cuter than it already is. Personally, I find the icing overly sweet in terms of flavour but you can easily peel it off. The shop itself is tiny but full of charming little details, like the black and white tiled floor, the fresh flowers on the terrace and the antique silver trays. If you are a fan of Pinterest or follow my “Paris City Guide” board, you may have already spotted its cute facade and the tea room upstairs where you can enjoy your cream puffs with coffee or tea.
Next time you’re in Paris, skip the macarons and eclairs in favour of Odette’s cream puffs – they’re definitely worth the splurge. You can combine your visit with a bit of sightseeing in the fifth arrondissement or a little pause if you’re looking for a clam spot to stretch your legs. A sweet treat from me to you!
