DIVONNE SUNDAY MARKET
Those who live in Geneva or have been there for a weekend are very well aware of the fact that everything is closed on Sundays. The city becomes very quiet and for some, dare I say, a tad boring. Thanks to my local friends, I have a great alternative suggestion for a fun Sunday morning: take a short trip over to the French border and visit the food market of the French spa town Divonne-les-Bains, in the foothills of the Jura Mountains!
Every Sunday along the Grande Rue in Divonne numerous vendors offer lots of different things: fruits, veggies, cheese, meat, wine, fresh pasta, pastries, flowers, clothes – the list goes on! You can spend quite some time perusing the goods on offer, people watching and talking to the lovely sellers.
But the most popular stalls are those with the fresh seafood where you can treat yourselves to oysters, shrimp, crab and lobster combined with crispy local white wine or a glass of Champagne if you’re feeling fancy. On our visit my friends and I ordered a full platter of seafood goodies which we washed down with bubbles by the river. A day to remember and a spot to come back to really soon. Can you think of a better way to spend your Sunday?
