BLACKBIRD
Bruges was one of the first cities I visited when I moved to Brussels and a place I return to every so often ever since. Over the years I have discovered some great spots I keep going back to, including Blackbird, a cute little cafe that has become my go-to brunch spot. Good things are meant to be shared, so here you go!
Just a few blocks from the Markt and Burg squares in the centre, you’ll find Blackbird. The first time I stumbled upon it was after a few hours of walking around and photographing the city for a magazine. My partner in crime and I were tired, famished and a bit cold, so we entered hoping to get a quick coffee. Seeing the food and lovely interior though, we instantly changed our minds and decided to have brunch. You know me, I’m always game when brunch is involved!
The place was packed and although we didn’t have a reservation, they managed to squeeze us in. If you plan on going during the weekend, I would definitely recommend booking a table in advance as Blackbird is fairly small and seems to be popular with locals and visitors! The ambiance is just lovely and on a warm day the best tables are the one on the little terrace that gets plenty of sunshine and views over the canal.
Depending on the time and your appetite, you can have breakfast, lunch or a cup of tea. I’ve tried pretty much everything on the menu and have my favourites: the open sandwich with smokes ham (looks expensive at first but is very filling) and of course, the Blackbird’s Special Breakfast (a variety of sandwiches, quiche, French toast, a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, coffee and some bubbles) which is a treat.
Enjoy and don’t forget to send me a photo on Instagram to let me know how you liked it (and make me jealous!!).
