THE MODERN PANTRY
Located in a beautiful Georgian townhouse at Clerkenwell, The Modern Pantry is one of my favourite brunch venues in London. What I love most about this spot, apart from the food obviously, is its modern yet homey feel. The restaurant spreads over three floors with airy and bright rooms decorated with basic furniture in earthy colours that made us feel as if we were invited at a friend’s house.
The female chef behind this place and co-founder of The Providores in Marylebone, Anna Hansen, has earned a reputation for her inventive fusion cuisine which successfully combines unusual ingredients with more traditional ones. This is reflected on the menu which comprises both typical dishes and experimental ones, including some gluten-free options. My partner in crime and I decided to go for eggs; he had the fried eggs with smoked streaky bacon, slow-roast tomatoes, buttered mushrooms while I opted for The Modern pantry’s take on eggs royale (English muffin topped with tea smoked salmon, two poached eggs and yuzu hollandaise). Both our choices proved to be a success – well executed and pretty tasty. For pudding we shared the raspberry and ricotta pancakes with berry and liquorice compote and crème fraiche, which looked beautiful indeed. One tip: they are very rich and filling, so make sure you leave room and order them in advance (it takes 20 minutes to make them).
I have to admit that when I did my research before actually booking a table at The Modern Pantry, I read many guests complaining about the service. During my visit staff were welcoming and attentive, so no complaints on my side! Next time I plan to go on a warmer day to enjoy their afternoon tea at their beautiful terrace overlooking the square and hopefully, a moment of British summer too.
