ROB, THE GOURMETS’ MARKET
Food shopping is – or should be anyway – a ritual. I really enjoy the whole process of taking the time to discover new flavours, ingredients and foodie ideas, so whenever I have time I make my way to local farmers’ markets in Brussels like the ones in Chatelain, Place Flagey or the Marche des Tanneurs. Now when I really want to treat myself in la crème de la crème of culinary delights, I visit Rob, The Gourmets’ Market in Woluwé-Saint-Pierre.
As the name suggests, Rob Gourmets’ Market is an upscale food emporium that could also be described as the Land of Plenty. With a tradition of over 70 years, when the original Rob’s was a delicatessen in Porte de Namur, the store now is well-stocked with food products from all over the world. Fresh fish and meat, sweet treats (including the yummy pasteis de nata from Forcado), fresh produce of exotic and local fruits and veggies, more than 300 different kinds of cheese, over 1600 wine labels and some top-notch foreign food brands are just some of the many foodie treats on offer – I always feel like I’m taking a culinary trip around the globe! The staff behind the various counters are true food enthusiasts keen on giving advice and making suggestions.
Upstairs there’s also a restaurant offering breakfast and lunch which is on my to-do list since I’ve heard very positive comments. I was also happy to discover that Rob’s also offers cooking classes with experienced chefs, so perhaps it’s something for those of you who are up for a bit of action in the kitchen. Having said that, Rob Gourmets’ Market is not your everyday supermarket but rather a place for a more special gastronomic shopping experience. This is reflected of course on the price tags. If you’re looking nevertheless for foodie inspiration or to indulge in a special something, Rob’s is definitely a spot that will please your eyes and tingle your tummy.
