LA BOTTEGA DELLA PIZZA
After reaching a verdict on the best burger spots in Brussels, I was looking for one more great place to complete my quest for the best pizza in town. And I did. La Bottega della Pizza is a tiny pizzeria in Saint Gilles that might have actually topped the list!
This spot is not what you’d call a fancy restaurant by any means. The menu is written on a blackboard in Italian while the decor is unassuming with checkered tablecloths, colorful tiles, wooden communal tables at the terrace and a few Italian products on the shelves. No frills, just really good pizza – they way an authentic trattoria should be. Run and owned by Roberto Casula, a native Italian, La Bottega della Pizza has worn quite a few awards, including the “Best Pizza Maker in Belgium” for 2013 but like any real foodie gem, all focus goes to the food rather than the prizes.
The menu offers lots of choice and covers all tastes. If you’re too hungry, you can start with a plate of antipasti and an aperitivo as you wait for your pizza. La Bottega della Pizza may not have a wood-fired oven but is nevertheless notorious for its perfect pizza dough, which is thin and has just the right amount of crispness. Add high quality toppings to the equation and you get some of the best pizza in Brussels! My favourite is the Margherita Burrata with cherry tomatoes, fresh basil leaves, chuncks of creamy burrata, tomato sauce and a drizzle of olive oil – simple yet utterly delicious! I never have room for dessert as one pizza is more than enough for one person but according to friends who’ve been there, their tiramisu is pretty good too.
If I had to complain about one thing, that would be the slow and at times, chaotic service. The pizza is so good though that it is worth the wait. Make sure to book a table in advance and bring some cash as they don’t accept cards or lunch vouchers. Buon Appetito!
