GRILLSKA HUSETS KONDITORI
The Swedes love to take a mid-afternoon break for a cup of coffee and a slice of cake. They actually have a special word for this mini ritual: fika. After exploring Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s Old Town, for a few good hours I was eager to get some rest and just admire the surroundings.
Grillska Husets Konditori was the perfect spot to do so. This café/bakery has a lovely terrace overlooking the beautiful Stotorget square and a homely interior for the cold Swedish days. They serve a large variety of sweet treats and lunch meals in generous portions. Given that it was extremely hot outside, I passed up on coffee and opted instead for their famous mumma, an egg pudding with cardamom and sugar, which was a real treat. Will definitely try to fina a recipe for a cardamom infused dessert to repeat at home!
Grillska Husets Konditori is run by Stockholms Stadsmission, a charitable group that works with the homeless. I always appreciate stores which intend to make a difference (remember Merci in Paris?), so knowing that my cake is for a good cause only made the whole experience even more pleasant.
