BRUXELLES LES BAINS
Summer in Brussels is nice but summer by the beach is better. Now, when these two come together, we’ve got Bruxelles les Bains / Brussel Bad! Yep, Brussels gets its own “beach” every summer between July and August and it’s a fun place to be.
After hearing about it for years, I finally made my way to Bruxelles les Bains just a few days after its opening. The weather wasn’t really sunny but it was still warm enough to enjoy a stroll around Brussels’ urban beach. I suppose I arrived with high expectations as I found the surroundings a little underwhelming. Maybe not entirely fair but for some reason I couldn’t help but compare it with Paris Plages. And while there are a few spots with sand here and there, it doesn’t really feel like a beach and the canal could use some upgrading. Not sure whether its nickname (La Croisetteke) is fair as I can’t see the resemblance with the South of France.
Having said all that, it’s a fun place to be and that’s why I decided to include it here on the blog. Besides the various food stalls and little drink stands / cocktail bars, there are loads of events and activities planned: live concerts, clubbing nights, yoga sessions, pétanque, dance workshops, literature walks,sailing lessons, clown shows and an open air cinema (my favourite! – remember this one?). It’s hard not to find something you’ll enjoy whether you fancy a bit of relaxation, quality time with the family or getting active with friends. The fact that the new Kanal – Centre Pompidou is just steps away and that there are a couple of comic walls you can see up close is just the icing on the cake!
