BEST PASTRY SHOPS IN ATHENS
There are many pastry shops in Athens but a few really stand out. Whether you like traditional Middle-Eastern sweets or western Europe ones, Athens has something to offer; Greeks do love their sweets! This list is meant to compile only the very best and I will make sure to update them as I try more new-to-me spots, so keep checking for newly added spots.
OURSE
This spot is my personal favourite to date! My first visit in Ourse when they first opened back in 2020 and ever since, I keep returning whenever my sweet tooth kicks in. French classics combined with a Greek flair will give your palate the best of both worlds. Don’t miss the St. Honoré, the almond tart and the Paris-Aegina (their take on the Paris-Brest with pistachio praline and ganache with pistachio from Aegina island).

MADAME FRAISE
The first ghost pastry shop in Athens has been an instant success ever since it opened its (online) doors. Their workshop in Pangrati is where the magic happens: French desserts with a twist. The rose cheesecake with rose mousse, raspberry jam and almond sablé is their star creation but I also love the kouign amann and the tarte Vibrato with bitter chocolate cremeux and salted toffee caramel.

ANTONIS SELEKOS – CONCEPTUAL DESSERTS
I first discovered this spot thanks to their incredible panetonne but there’s definitely more to it! The galaktomboureko millefeuille is a must and so are the New York cheesecake profiterole. Most of the desserts are assembled right before your eyes and you can have a specialty coffee while you wait for your order to be prepared.

DIMITRIS ECONOMIDES ATHENS
This spot is probably the prettiest of the lot – it has the feel of an expensive boutique where the decadent creations of Dimitris Economides are beautifully presented. Trained in Paris and referring to himself as a “pastritect”, he whips up French pastries that are decadent and truly delicious.

SOUIT BY BABIS ZIDILIS
Colorful, fun and delicious – three words that catch the essence of this spot. The space looks like what I would call an urban tiki bar with lots of different pastries displayed in the windows. Babis Zidilis, known from Alemagou in Mykonos and Funky Gorumet in Athens, opened Souit in the middle of the pandemic. A bold yet successful move which was met with enthusiasm by Athenians. Do try the and the baba pina colada and the coffee tart.

IN LOVE AGAIN
This concept store delivers on its name because every time I return, I do fall in love again with it! Located in a pedestrian street in downtown Athens, it was launched by the talented team of the award-wining bar Baba Au Rum in late 2021. The space is modern and inviting: lush plants, specialty coffee, merchandise and of course, lots of different deserts inspired by Baba Au Rum’s cocktail list.

CHOUREAL
When the team of Choureal in Thessaloniki announced that they were coming to Athens back in 2018, my sweet tooth was jumping with joy (yes, that is a thing!). This is where you’ll find Athens’ best profiterole: choux à la crème garnished with chocolate sauce. There are many variations on offer as well as a couple of other sweets, like éclairs and Paris-Brest, but personally, I’m a fan of the classic profiterole with whipped cream and Valrhona chocolate.
