BALLS & GLORY

Balls & Glory had been on my ever-growing foodie list ever since I spotted their beautiful restaurant in Antwerp close to the MAS Museum (which has the most wonderful views over the city by the way!) about a year ago. Luckily, I didn’t have to travel that far to try it as they had a new branch open in Brussels in the meantime. It had to be a sign! My suspicions were confirmed when I received an invitation to attend a Chilean wine tasting at their premises – the time had finally come and I couldn’t wait to try Balls & Glory’s famous meatballs.

Meatballs may be typically associated with Italian cuisine but they’re also a Belgian staple with many variations depending on the region. Whether cooked with beer, sirop de Liège or cherry sauce, they’re delicious and usually served with frites or stoemp, i.e. mashed potatoes with vegetables. And while I do enjoy a well-cooked traditional dish, I’m always keen on tasting classic Belgian recipes with a twist – cases in point: Peï & Meï and Madame Chapeau.

Wim Ballieu, the chef behind Balls & Glory, explained how he came up with the concept (slow food served fast) and evolved the family business. The meatballs on offer are much bigger than the traditional ones, handcrafted with meat sourced from Wim’s family farm, stuffed with tasty fillings and served with two sauces and fresh salad or stoemp as a side. I have tried different flavour combinations since my first visit and am happy to report that the vegetarian options are delicious too. Other details that I really liked: complimentary lemon-infused water on all tables (a refreshing sight in Belgium) and fresh apples – a clever nod on healthy eating. Those with a sweet tooth will also appreciate the brownies and homemade ice pops.

If you’re looking for a rich, comforting lunch or a casual dinner with friends, give Balls & Glory a try. You can combine your meal with drinks at the Flamingo bar next door or a performance at the nearby Royal Flemish Theatre (KVS).
