AACHEN CHRISTMAS MARKET

Christmas is pretty special, don’t you think? It feels like somebody has waved a magic wand and made everything more beautiful, more glittery and a whole lot sweeter. One of my favourite holiday traditions since I arrived in Belgium is to visit Aachen’s Christmas market (or Weihnachtsmarkt for the German-speaking readers).

Aachen is a beautiful town in the North Rhine area of Germany and just a two-hour drive away from Brussels. The city is famous for its Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, its thermal hot springs and for hosting one of the most popular Christmas markets in Germany. The Weihnachtsmarkt is held around Aachen’s Cathedral and Town Hall, which are festively decorated for the occasion. More than 100 illuminated stalls, colourful Christmas ornaments and the seductive smell of spiced wine are only a few of the things that make it really special! Don’t forget to try the local specialty, the so-called Aachener Printen, i.e. freshly-baked gingerbread cookies.

After indulging in a bit of shopping, mulled wine and a couple of wurst rolls, you can treat yourself to a spa for the ultimate relaxation experience. The market runs from November 22nd until December 23rd, so hurry up!
