APOTHEKE

Apotheke had been on my radar for quite some time, so when I finally visited New York I just had to go there! After a relaxing stroll around the High Line, I decided I was rested enough to dance the night away and have a couple of cocktails. I headed all the way to Chinatown, excited as ever, but the only thing I could see was an old chemist’s sign above a wooden door, tucked away in a narrow street with a few little Chinese restaurants. Initially I thought it was all due to my horrific sense of direction, but after a few desperate moments I spotted Apotheke’s notorious bouncer who was surprisingly kind and even paid me a compliment (!).

I entered and there I was, in the bar of my dreams: dim lighting, cool music, hip crowd full of energy and a long list of “prescriptions”, i.e. amazing cocktails to choose from! The bar looks like a chemistry project and has a decadent, stylish feel.  Bare brick walls, a big marble bar, comfy velvet sofas, mixologists wearing white lab coats and glass jars filled with elixirs and herbs. I had way too many cocktails, which were all truly inspired (hence the one and only decent photo taken with my camera), but would recommend the Bees Knees (vodka, bee pollen, goji berry reduction, pink guava, ginger, lime and agave nectar) and the Almond Old Fashioned (raw almond infused rum, cardamom, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, molasses). When in New York, it’s a must!
